Clinical Spotlight: Flonase Nasal Spray for Rhinitis Management


Chronic inflammatory diseases of the nasal mucosa such as allergic rhinitis, rhinosinusitis, and nasal polyposis pose a significant clinical burden but can be effectively managed with topically active corticosteroids (1,2).


Allergic rhinitis is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the nasal mucosa triggered by environmental allergens (1). Flonase Nasal Spray

Glenmark Pharmaceuticals has recently received USFDA approval for its generic version of Flonase® (fluticasone propionate) nasal spray. The product is bioequivalent and therapeutically equivalent to the reference drug, Flonase® Nasal Spray (0.05 mg/spray), and will be distributed in the U.S (3).

Fluticasone propionate nasal spray provides effective relief for both seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis by reducing nasal inflammation and mucus production. Its efficacy is maximized with regular, daily use rather than as an immediate rescue therapy. Both spray and drop formulations demonstrate very low systemic bioavailability, thereby minimizing systemic drug exposure (1,2).


Safety & Precautions


Over three decades of clinical experience have established intranasal corticosteroids as having an excellent safety profile, with adverse reactions generally limited to mild, short lived local effects such as nasal irritation and epistaxis (1). To minimize irritation and ensure safe use, patients should follow defined device use instructions. Recommended technique includes gently shaking the bottle, removing the green cap, directing the nozzle away from the face, and depressing the lid until a fine mist is released. The nozzle should then be placed into one nostril, with the other occluded, and angled slightly away from the nasal septum while the patient inhales gently (4).


Ongoing device care is equally important. Patients should clean the nozzle once weekly to maintain accurate dosing by removing the white nozzle, rinsing it under running water, and allowing it to air dry at room temperature. A blocked nozzle should never be cleared with a pin, as this can irreversibly damage the spray mechanism. Once dry, the nozzle is pressed back into place until it clicks and is then re primed before the next use (4).
